Keshubhai Patel was a veteran leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. He was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for six times. Patel served as Chief Minister of Gujarat for two terms. He quit BJP in 2012 and floated the Gujarat Parivartan Party, which later merged with Bharatiya Janata Party.
Born in Visavadar town of Junagadh district in 1928, Patel started his political career as a worker for the Jan Sangh. He contributed a lot in spreading the ideology of the Sangh in various parts of western India. Keshubhai was elected to the Lok Sabha for the Rajkot constituency but resigned and joined Babubhai Patel's Janata Morcha government as an agriculture minister from 1978 to 1980. He was a six-time member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. In 1995 he served as Chief Minister of Gujarat for a few months in 1995 and then again from 1998 to 2001. Keshubhai resigned as the chief minister on 2nd October 2001 due to poor health. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi. In 2012 he left BJP and formed the Gujarat Parivartan Party, which performed poorly in 2012 Assembly polls and merged with the BJP in 2014.
Illness and Death
Keshubhai Patel complained of difficulty in breathing on the morning of 29 October 2020. He was taken to a hospital, where he passed away. Many including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed sadness at the sudden demise of Keshubhai Patel .
President Ram Nath Kovind: With the demise of Keshubhai Patel the nation has lost a stalwart leader. His long public life was dedicated to improving the lives of millions, especially in villages. As champion of farmers' causes, he enjoyed extraordinary rapport with masses.
Narendra Modi: Our beloved and respected Keshubhai has passed away…I am deeply pained and saddened. He was an outstanding leader who cared for every section of society. His life was devoted towards the progress of Gujarat and the empowerment of every Gujarati.
Keshubhai mentored and groomed many younger Karyakartas including me. Everyone loved his affable nature. His demise is an irreparable loss. We are all grieving today. My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers. Spoke to his son Bharat and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.
